Batch Watch Sasquatch - Part 2 - The Asylum’s Bigfoot

In this the second instalment of the Batch Watch Sasquatch experiment, Adam and Mark debrief and discuss The Asylum’s 'Bigfoot' from 2012 a Bigfoot flick that pits Danny Partridge and Greg Brady against a giant forest monster and the unlikely duo’s pledge to save the creature, which is the last of its species.

The cast is a veritable who’s who of 80’s pop culture. Starring Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey from Twin Peaks) , Barry Williams (Greg Brady), Alice Cooper, Billy Idol, Danny Bonaduce (Danny Partridge) , Bruce Davison (Mr Henderson from Harry and the Hendersons TV show and the director) and Howard "Johnny Fever" Hesseman (Mr Moore from 80’s sitcom Head of the Class).

The plot (if you can call it that) focuses on a concert promoter (Danny Bonaduce) having an 80's festival near Mount Rushmore and to do this he must destroy several acres of Forestland, which doesn't sit well with environmentalist and forest lover (Barry Williams). Soon the two are battling each other over the land but Bigfoot shows up and wants everyone off him home turf.

The Bigfoot here isn't the one we've all come to love but instead it has more to do with King Kong. Yes, the title creature here is a gigantic monster that runs wild just like the big ape, which is just downright stupid and silly.

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 34 - Mockbuster Video

Episode 34

Mockbuster Video

In this episode Adam and Mark dive head first in to the mystical world of the mockbuster. A Mockbuster is a movie created with the intention of exploiting the publicity of another major motion picture with a similar title or subject. Mockbusters are often made with a low budget and quick production to maximize profit.

Mockbusters often use a title with a similar-sounding name to the mainstream feature it intends to piggy-back upon. For instance, the 2006 mockbuster Snakes on a Train traded on the publicity surrounding the theatrically released Snakes on a Plane. Besides the aforementioned film, The Asylum has also released The Land That Time Forgot, Transmorphers, AVH: Alien vs. Hunter, The Da Vinci Treasure, Battle of Los Angeles, Atlantic Rim and Paranormal Entity.

Mockbusters have also had legal complications with false advertising. They supposedly tweak the plot lines and the titles just enough to skirt legal trouble and yet ride on the publicity of major blockbusters. Until the Hobbit case, mockbuster production houses have been able to achieve soundalike titling to such an extent that even actors in the movies have been confused about which movie they are starring in

Because mockbusters are deliberately similar to more famous movies, some movie studios have sued mockbuster studios for allegedly tricking consumers into renting or purchasing the wrong movie through intentionally deceptive marketing. Warner Bros. similarly sued The Asylum over their release of Age of the Hobbits. The judge ruled in favour of Warner Bros., writing that "There is substantial likelihood that consumers will be confused by Age Of Hobbits and mistakenly purchase the film intending to purchase The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."
