Wastelands Radio Show - EP 90 - TC 2000

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 90

Billy Blanks in TC 2000

In this episode Adam and Mark visit a post apocalyptic future where the planets surface is run by Kung Fu gangs and the rich live underground protected by the elite security force the Tracker Communicators. Staring Mr TaeBo Billy Blanks and the legendary Bolo Yeung. From 1993 - TC 2000

By 2020, the environment is so bad that the rich have moved underground, leaving the poor to fight for survival in the contaminated Surface World. Protecting the underground are cops known as TCs (Tracker Communicators). TC Jason Storm becomes public enemy no. 1 after his partner Zoey (Bobbie Phillips) is murdered by a surface gang known as The Picassos (yeah, The Picassos) and Storm questions who let them into the underground. To escape, Storm heads to Surface World where he runs into Sumai (Bolo Yeung), a freedom fighter who might just know why The Controller wants to go take over Surface World.

Blanks is an excellent martial artist, which helps bypass his stiff acting filled with blank (ha!) expressions. As always, Bolo steals the show. Frequent Blanks co-star Jalal Merhi is the gang leader Niki and I COME IN PEACE alien Matthia Hues, a damn good fighter in his own right, stars as The Controller's right hand man Bigalow. Bobbie Phillips provides the female sidekick, which takes an odd turn about halfway in when she becomes the titular half-robot TC 2000.

Wastelands Radio Show - EP 87 - R.O.T.O.R

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 87

R.O.T.O.R

In this episode Adam and Mark talk about a murderous robot super cop of the future on a rampage - A prototype intended for crime combat escapes from the development lab and goes on a killing rampage. sound familiar? Well this flick is one part Robocop, one part Terminator, and all parts cheese. From 1987 it’s R.O.T.O.R - Robotic Officer Tactical Operations Research.

R.O.T.O.R. (also known as Blue Steel and R.O.T.O.R.: Police Force) is a 1987 American science fiction action film starring Richard Gesswein, Jayne Smith and Margaret Trigg. The film has been described as a low-budget copy of The Terminator and RoboCop with some elements taken from Judge Dredd. The movie is well known in Argentina as the origin of the name of the Argentinian rock band Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado (He killed a motorcycle cop).

Corrupt Division Commander Earl Buglar orders his subordinate Dr. J. Barrett C. Coldyron, a leading scientist in the field of police robotics, to rush development of an experimental police robot. Buglar wants the prototype – dubbed R.O.T.O.R. (Robotic Officer of the Tactical Operations Research/Reserve Unit) — ready in sixty days so that Senator Donald D. Douglas can take public credit for the project and use it to catapult himself into the White House.

Coldyron warns Buglar that the prototype is several years away from completion but is forced to resign and is replaced by his incompetent assistants, Dr. Houghtaling and his robot Willard. In Coldyron's absence, R.O.T.O.R. is inadvertently activated and put on duty. The robot executes a motorist for speeding and terrorizes his young fiancée, Sonya, who the robot views as an accomplice in her boyfriend's infraction. Upon learning his creation has escaped, Coldyron enlists the help of his colleague Dr. Corrine Steele, who designed the unit's combat chassis. Together, Steele and Coldyron track down the rampaging robot and attempt to stop it from killing again.

You've heard the phrase "so bad it's good!" Well, most of the time it isn't true. It's so bad, it's just bad. But this movie truly IS so bad it's good. The dialog is horrendous and sometimes nonsensical. And they really did try to be clever with it, for instance, there's a scene where the hero is giving a presentation on his robot to some scientists - each scientist's last name, along with the name of the place they work, is the name of a Beach Boy, and the dialog in the scene is full of really laboured Beach Boys song references.Once the robot starts following one woman and she calls the police, none of the decisions made by the hero make any sense at all.

Truly a prize turkey.

Wastelands Radio Show - EP 78 - Rolling Vengeance

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 78

Rolling Vengeance

In this episode Adam and Mark talk about the 1987 Canuxploitation film about a truck driver that builds a special, eight-ton battle wagon to help get revenge against the rednecks who killed his family. Directed by Steven Hilliard Stern and starring Don Michael Paul and Ned Beatty. Rolling Vengeance.

A truck driver’s family is killed by a group of red necks. Unable to cope with his feelings of loss, helplessness and utter crap local law enforcement, he makes a decision we can all sympathise with. He builds a gigantic, flame-spouting tank with giant tires and proceeds to take revenge on those who have wronged him, as well as their vehicles and buildings.

The vehicle itself is impressive -- it's not just a pickup truck on huge tires, it's a wholly scrap-built "Mad Max" battlewagon. It carries a gigantic retractable drill/metal cutter on its front bumper, apparently scavenged from some gratuitously suggestive metal-rendering machinery.

Episode 33

Wastelands Idiot box - Demolition Man

In this episode Adam and Mark continue to pay homage to the idiot box Monday night movie. This week they caught the 1993 American science fiction action film directed by Marco Brambilla in his directorial debut - Demolition Man. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, and Nigel Hawthorne. Stallone is John Spartan, a risk-taking police officer, who has a reputation for causing destruction while carrying out his work. After a failed attempt to rescue hostages from evil crime lord Simon Phoenix, they are both sentenced to be cryogenically frozen in 1996.

Simon Phoenix, is revived for a parole hearing well into the 21st century. Revived into a society free from crime, Phoenix resumes his murderous rampage, and no one can stop him. John Spartan. In 2032, the former cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Barbara have merged into peaceful, utopian San Angeles. Unable to stop him with their non-violent solutions, the police release Spartan to help recapture Phoenix. Now after 36 years, Spartan has to adapt himself to the future society he has no knowledge about.

The story makes allusions to works including Aldous Huxley's 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World, and HG Wells's The Sleeper Awakes. The film earned a worldwide total of $159 million, and was considered a successful film for Stallone.

Factoids

  • Wesley Snipes' kicks and punches sometimes look lurchy and awkward. Snipes is an accomplished black belt in real life, and his kicks and punches were so fast that they blurred on-camera. Hence the producers asked him to slow them down.

  • Sylvester Stallone wanted Simon Phoenix to be played by Jackie Chan. Chan declined, since Asian audiences don't like the idea of actors who have always played heroes suddenly playing evil characters.

  • Sandra Bullock replaced Lori Petty after a few days filming. Petty left due to creative differences.

  •  In Kuwait, the Arabic title was "Rambo The Destroyer". Since Rambo movies were very popular, the distributor thought associating Sylvester Stallone to Rambo in the title would sell more tickets.
